Our speakers

Meet this year's amazing line-up of expert speakers!

Holger Eggert

Holger Eggert | Strategic Designer at Levelgreen

A Framework for Impact Through Design

When everyone can and should design, where does that leave designers? And when designers can and should do everything, where should they focus to have the most value and meaningful impact? In this talk, Holger Eggert will give you a framework for design focused on impact at different levels. And he'll show you how he's talking to organisations about it.

Nikki Anderson

Nikki Anderson | Founder & Managing Director at User Research Academy

Balancing Tech and Rigor in User Research

Many user research processes come from academia, but it can be challenging to apply this academic rigor to the fast-paced nature of tech and product companies. Because of this, one side gets left behind - either research isn't done quickly enough to apply insights to the roadmap, or we compromise on the quality of the research we run. This imbalance can cause teams to skip user research or gather misleading insights. In this talk, I will walk the audience through an academic approach to research design with actionable tips on ensuring it works with the timeline of tech and product teams.

Bartłomiej Lenard

Bartłomiej Lenard | Senior UX Designer at ING

The Difficulty and Complexity of Designing for the Immediate Future

Think of an interaction, as complex combination of everything that company is and represents. How important is the personality of its chatbot? And what impact can it have on your brand's results? I'll discuss this and more in my presentation as I show you how to manage a strategic project through the lens of design. I'll talk about how can you stay 2 steps ahead by making things in a holistic way, combining design and strategy, uncovering inspiration far and wide, creating your own effective tools, making a model future-proof and defining clear design goals.

Clementina Gentile

Clementina Gentile | Service Designer at Proximus Belgium

H.O.P.E.: on Poetry and Design

When design becomes a commodity, what is the role of the designer? How can we shift the focus from standardisation and optimisation to social impact and relevance? In an attempt to answer these questions, this talk investigates 4 principles of poetry that can be applied to design practice – hindrance, openness, polyphony and elegance.

Previous Editions

A few years ago, designers at ING realised something was missing. They wanted a conference by designers, for designers. An obligation-free space where they could learn from brilliant minds in their field.

So they put their heads together and developed Design The Next Step – a free conference by designers for designers. And it was a hit.

Held in Rotterdam in 2018, the first edition saw inspiring talks by experts from Spotify, KLM and Emotion Studio.

Then building on its success, DTNS 2019 in Brussels featured insights on everything from Voice UI to Ethical Design in the Age of Algorithms.
